CONYERS—Rockdale County firefighters hit the streets Thursday as the walked in the rain door-to-door with fire safety brochures and smoke detectors in the Pinedale community. Pinedale is where the fatal fire claimed the lives of four children last week.

Firefighters installed free smoke detectors to those who needed them and gave out batteries and other information as residents arrived home from work.

“We wanted to go in the evenings to reach people after work,” said Tonya Parker, Rockdale’s director of community affairs.

Although the educational campaign follows a tragedy, Rockdale firefighters conduct educational awareness programs throughout the year in the county’s schools and communities, said Parker.
