Archbishop Ruth W. Smith Holmes, senior pastor of Light of the World Christian Tabernacle in Stockbridge, was honored by the SCLC during the 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington.
The award was presented on Aug. 26 at the SCLC’s Legacy Awards Gala in Washington, D.C., where Archbishop Holmes was lauded as a “Torch Bearer.” She was honored for her many years of work as a scholar and spiritual leader committed to the ideals and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who founded the SCLC.
In keeping Dr. King’s dream alive, Archbishop Holmes passed the torch to her daughters, Dr. Tamica Smith Jones and Takiyah Smith, who attended the gala with her.
“My passion is to never be the type of preacher, in the words of an old preacher, to take a photograph of a loaf of bread and try to feed the people with it or to paint a picture of a glass of water and try to give people to drink, but that I will in fact, feed people from the true Word of God,” said Archbishop Holmes.
