Greater Atlanta students compete in Regional Mock Trial Competition

Lawyers from across DeKalb County and the greater Atlanta area will volunteer for the 2014 Young Lawyers Division (YLD) Mock Trial Competition on Saturday, Jan. 25 at the DeKalb County Courthouse, 556 N. McDonough Street in Decatur.  The event, sponsored by the State Bar of Georgia, brings together approximately 100 youths from seven DeKalb high schools to compete for a regional title.

“We are extremely excited about the opportunity to work with the tremendously talented young people for this year’s mock trial competition,” said Nicole Marchand Golden, who has served as organizer of the mock trial competition for nine years.

Round 1 of competition begins at 9 a.m.; Round 2 at 1 p.m.; and the Championship Round begins at 4:30 p.m.  The award ceremony will be held in the Jury Assembly Room at 4 p.m.  The top 3 winners will advance to the District Competition in February.  That winner will advance to the State Competition in March and possibly Nationals in May.

“We have students from across the county coming together to compete. Hopefully, this platform will not only inspire spirited debated among our young people but will also encourage those participating to pursue a career in law,” added Golden, who serves as the Chief Assistant District Attorney for DeKalb County and is a graduate of Emory Law School.

The event is free to the public and parking is free in the Courthouse parking deck.
