In recognition of October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the DeKalb County District Attorney’s Office in partnership with DeKalb Police Special Victims Unit will host a two-day interactive forum focused on teen domestic violence beginning Tuesday, Oct. 16, at 10:15 a.m. at Decatur High School.
“Love Doesn’t Hurt” is an interactive discussion that includes live theatrical reenactments of various forms of teen related domestic violence situations. On Oct. 17, beginning at 10:15 a.m., the forum will culminate with a mock trial presentation depicting a domestic violence court scenario followed by guest speaker Johanna Orozco. Orozco was just 18 years old when her ex-boyfriend shot her in her face with a shotgun in March 2007. “Far too often we see a history of domestic violence beginning during the high school years. Both young men and young women learn abusive behaviors that they eventually consider an acceptable part of a normal and healthy relationship,” said DeKalb District Attorney Robert James. “Our goal is to change that perception and shed light on the serious impact and sometimes fatal tragedies caused by domestic violence.” Decatur Hig’s drama club will reenact various scenarios throughout the two days to prompt discussion and increase awareness of teen domestic violence scenarios.
