Warning: I-285/I-75 interchange could be congested this weekend Print E-mail

ATLANTA The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) is warning motorists that I-285 may be very congested this weekend if weather permits contractors to continue working across the top end of I-285.

Stay away from that interchange (I-75/I-285), if you possibly can.  The top end of 285 will be pretty congested, too, said GDOT District Construction Engineer Lee Upkins. We wish we could complete this work without closures, but it just isnt possible.  I am urging motorists to plan ahead this weekend.

During similar lane closures last weekend, motorists experienced long delays.  This weekend could have the same traffic tie-ups if motorists do not plan ahead.

Forecasters are calling for a 50 percent chance of rain on Saturday and a 30 percent chance on Sunday.

Just as it was last weekend, the interchange work may be the most problematic for travelers.  A few ramps will be closed and several ramps will be partially closed to complete paving and striping.  Well-signed detours will be in place for each closure.

Across the top end of I-285, up to three lanes will be closed in both directions between Ashford Dunwoody Road and Atlanta Road for bridge joint replacements and guardrail work in several locations.

On I-20 eastbound, just outside the perimeter in Dekalb County from Wesley Chapel Road to Snapfinger Road, contractors plan to close two lanes for pavement work.

Also, contractors will continue the construction of the bridges in the SR 400/I-85 interchange. Flagging operations on surface streets around the interchange and various lane closures on State Route 400 are expected to cause delays in the area so motorists should plan ahead to avoid the backups. The HOV ramps at I-85 and Lindbergh Drive also remain closed until mid-July for work on the bridge columns for the interchange.
