Georgia Piedmont Technical College will welcome 2013 Presidential Medal of Freedom and civil rights legend, Rev. C.T. Vivian, to deliver the school’s spring commencement ceremony speech on Saturday, May 31, 10 a.m., at The House of Hope Atlanta, 4650 Flat Shoals Parkway, Decatur.
Vivian is best known as a champion for civil and human rights, working alongside the late Martin Luther King, Jr. and other luminaries of the modern civil rights movement. Vivian is also a staunch advocate for education and youth leadership development. He has served as National President of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) and provided counsel to Presidents Johnson, Carter, Reagan, Clinton and Obama.
“We are honored to have an American hero such as Dr. Vivian give our commencement address. There are few who can as eloquently and passionately inflame the hearts and minds of our students as they embark on the next phase of their academic and professional careers,” said Dr. Jabari Simama, President, Georgia Piedmont Technical College.
This year, more than 2,600 GPTC students will graduate with a degree, diploma or certificate.
“We are equipping our students with the needed skills required to succeed in the 21st century, while challenging them to be change agents in our communities, as Dr. Vivian and other civil rights legends have been,” said Dr. Simama.
The commencement exercise is open to the public. 770-786-9522.
