GABPA: Lessons from Trayvon Martin Case

Trayvonorange

This week, in recognition of February as Black History month, members of the Greater Atlanta Chapter of the National Black Prosecutors Association are leading six panel discussions at DeKalb, Fulton, and City of Atlanta high schools to examine the realities of African-American boys’ and young men’s interactions with law enforcement.

“Too often African-American males are disproportionately impacted by negative interactions with law enforcement personnel.  This should not be the case,” said National Black Prosecutors Association President Bruce Brown.

The veteran male prosecutors on the panels will be joined by local law enforcement officers, including street gang experts.  The panel discussions coincide with the anniversary of Trayvon Martin’s death.  Entitled “Real Talk about the Law:  Lessons Learned from Trayvon Martin,” the goal is to reach at-risk high school males.  The discussions will include role-playing and offer realistic answers to the students’ very real questions.

Founded in 1983, the NBPA has more than 800 members in the United States and Canada.  In addition to providing education and leadership in the legal profession, the NBPA hosts national and regional forums that explore subjects impacting the needs and concerns of the black community.
