Trumpet Awards sound alarm for non-violence among youths
This year, Hope Schools of Excellence in Stockbridge helped kick off the 18th Annual Trumpet Awards. The private academy hosted a pre-event on Jan. 27 called “Generation Connection” featuring a panel discussion on non-violence, the Hope Schools of Excellence dance troupe and musical artist Kannon Patterson.

Some 350 students attended Generation Connection coming from Mount Vernon Christian School, Green Pastures, Miller Grove Middle School, Miller Grove High, and Salem High School. The panelists included Sean Garrett, music writer, singer and producer; K’Jon, R&B vocalist; Azim Rashid, Sr., vice president of Atlantic Records; and Edward Long, writer and producer.

Xernona Clayton, executive producer of the Trumpet Awards, said the Generation Connection program was designed to help expose students to excellence and achievement from various professionals, entrepreneurs and celebrities.

“Hosting the Trumpet Awards’ Generation Connection was our way of giving back to the community.  We sent invitations to public and private schools.  I also wanted the opportunity to work with and learn from Mrs. Xernona Clayton, who is an American icon and children's advocate. This year's focus was "Violence and Violence Prevention."  This topic is very relevant in our schools today.  Having known about Mrs. Clayton's historic achievements relative to non-violence over the past 40+ years, I knew that I would learn a lot from her.  I also wanted our students to be exposed to leaders who are of Mrs. Clayton's statue."  said Brenda Stinson, who with her husband, Mr. Joseph M. Stinson, Jr., founded Hope Schools of Excellence.

The academy, which serves students in grades 1-12, focuses on technology, engineering, science, math and leadership. Hope Schools of Excellence recently relocated from Lithonia to a 25-acre campus with over 66,000 square feet. Located at  2178 Highway 138 East, Stockbridge, Georgia 30281. 678-565-0224.
