STONE MOUNTAIN, GA – At tonight’s virtual board called meeting, the DeKalb County Board of Education voted to approve a separation agreement with Superintendent Cheryl Watson-Harris effective immediately.
Board members voted to name Dr. Vasanne Tinsley as the interim superintendent, citing its full confidence in Tinsley’s ability to operate the day-to-day activities of the DeKalb County School District (DCSD). Dr. Tinsley brings a wealth of experience to DCSD, formerly serving as the Deputy Superintendent of Student Support & Intervention in the district.
“We appreciate Mrs. Cheryl Watson-Harris for her service to the DeKalb County School District and wish her the best in her future endeavors,” Board Chair Vickie B. Turner said. “The Board has the utmost confidence in Dr. Tinsley serving as the interim superintendent. The immediate departure of Mrs. Watson- Harris will have no bearing on the search for the next superintendent. The Board remains fully committed to an open and transparent process and supporting the students of DCSD.”

I’m not a parent, grandparent or guardian but what was beyond upset of what I’ ve seen with Druid Hills High School.
It’s surprising to see those students attending classes in such deplorable conditions. It’s especially dangerous for students/ teacher who may have respiratory problems and even dangerous for those without them. Being near Emory University/ CDC,I expected for the school to be physically top notch .
Although Mrs.Harris Watson had her flaws, the Board Of Education had far more. As some people have rightfully argued, the problems with Druid Hills didn’t start with Mrs .Harris and definitely will not end with her. The members should be held accountable as they held her.
If the school were houses, they would be condemned. School funds or not, they should be treated like them. There is no way that I would let my kids( if I had any) attend Druid Hills or any other other DeKalb County school. If you have to consecutively fire superintendents like that, there are problems within the school board. One of them is obviously not caring about the teachers, parents and students educational well being.
It wasn’t that long ago that Clayton county had this same problem but they have resolved and seem to be going up. Two superintendents later,DeKalb still continues to be stuck in a hole .
Some people are baffled that a childless woman like me would be this concerned about this issue. Why not? It’s about caring about humanity. I did have nephews that did attend DeKalb County Schools and yes..at least with one of the their schools,it wasn’t as bad as Druid Hills High, but it was subpar.
What people may not also get is that problems like the one at Druid Hills effects us more than they think . DeKalb County came close to losing their accreditation status and can again. Without that your kids diploma will be null and void. It also affects your community,as there are people/ business es who wouldn’t want to move in it. It has been said that the top go getter for a quick sale for a house are good schools .
Druid Hills may be more in the Central to North side of DeKalb county but it doesn’t matter what part of the county the school is in,it as a whole ,it affects all. The situation with Druid Hills just have it another black eye .
