Salem High teacher in Conyers arrested for assaulting student

ROCKDALE COUNTY, GA The Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office has charged and arrested a teacher at Salem High School in Conyers with simple battery after a thorough investigation involving the assault of a 14-year-old male student.

On Jan. 21, Marquette Thinn, 44, of Lawrenceville, was seen on video pushing a 14-year-old male student to the ground in a classroom filled with other students during a verbal altercation in which he cursed at the student. The student complained of wrist pain resulting from the assault by the male teacher.

Thinn was a teacher in the school’s Social Studies Department. He had been a teacher at Salem since August 2020 and his job ended on Jan. 25, 2022, said Cindy Ball, a spokesperson for Rockdale County Public Schools (RCPS).

Ball said the district could not comment further.
“We cannot comment on personnel matters; However, we work diligently to investigate all allegations of employee misconduct. Rockdale County Public Schools (RCPS) expects all employees to conduct themselves professionally and ethically to provide a positive teaching and learning environment for students and staff, Ball stated. 


Deputy Jedidia Canty, a spokesperson for the Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office, said the investigation is ongoing.

“The Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office takes any crime involving a student with the utmost priority to assure parents, staff, and citizens of Rockdale County that our school system is a safe learning environment for their children,” the Sheriff’s Office stated in its news release on Jan. 26.
